Lefkimi -South Corfu

Lefkimi -South Corfu

The whole of the area is lovely, the town is located within a fertile plain full of olive trees, vineyards and vegetable gardens, with a small river flowing through it. The interesting part of the story is that this river is partly navigable , you can see several boats anchored there.

Lefkimi is the second largest town of Corfu, 40 km southern of the Corfu town.

Actually is a large village at south Corfu and it resulted from the unification of traditional villages and settlements.

The charm of the place, where donkeys are still occasionally used as transport and some women retain traditional costume, lies in its resistance to tourism

Each of these villages has its own important history and it i worth walking around and enjoying yourselves here .

All over Lefkimmi, note the two-storey mansions , the arched houses and search for the traditional cobbled streets , with rounded stones artistically combined by old craftsmen

At Melikia you will discover houses and mansions that date back to the 15th century and don’t ommit to visit the church of Agios Isavros with unique frescoes and icons of the 16th century.

There are many other churches worth seeing, as those of Aghios Arsenios, Aghioi Anargyri, Panaghia and Aghioi Theodoroi with a very interesting bell tower. There is also the Holy Monastery of “Kyra ton Angelon” (meaning “the Lady of the Angels” in Greek), dedicated to Virgin Mary.

Its narrow streets are lined with merchants’ mansions and cottages in various stages of renovation.

The town has a number of cafes and places to eat situated along the river although mainly the town is geared towards local living and not tourism.

Sit by the river enjoying a meal or a drink and watch the world go by, then follow the river to the sea and have a swim.

You will enjoy swimming at the beach of Alykes (3 kilometers northern to the town) ,and at the beach of Buca, 3 kilometers at the Northeast, a few meters northern to the mouth of the river, to which the beach owes its name (“bocca” means “mouth” in Italian and this is the Venetian version of the word).

A well signposted road leads to the small harbour of Alikes(saltpans) where until recently horses toiled bringing the salt from the salt flats here to be processed. This has now stopped and the old flats are now a spectacular wildlife sanctuary where flamingos, egrets and many migratory birds can be seen. The harbour is still a base for local fishermen who land their catch there, and the nearby beach has several basic tavernas which offer a real Greek welcome.
